Apple, EMI ink deal for John Lennon downloads
John Lennon is making his debut on iTunes, starting today. EMI has struck a deal to make 16 of Lennon's solo albums available for download for the first time, with the blessing of Yoko Ono, who said, "John would have loved the fact that his music will now be available in a format suited to a new generation of listeners."
Beach Boys are still going strong
While the Beach Boys was formed in the 1960s, they certainly haven't lost their following. A recent concert in the Boston area had twice the audience that concerts in the venue normally have. An attendee said, "Frankie Valli's performance on July 14 didn't even have half the people."
Mick Jagger to release a duet with John Lennon
Mick Jagger is releasing a duet with John Lennon. The song, entitled Too Many Cooks (Spoil the Soup), was recorded by the legendary musicians over 30 years ago and will feature on Jagger's new compilation album The Very Best of Mick Jagger. The track features Jagger on vocals, Lennon on guitar and Ringo Starr on drums.
Newly released government documents show Beatlemania craze
The Beatles were mobbed by British diplomats during a visit to the country's embassy in Washington D.C. in 1964, according to newly-released government files. The diplomats were so out of control, one member of the group even snipped a lock of drummer Ringo Starr's hair.
Phil Spector still producing despite murder trial
Legendary music producer Phil Spector is continuing to work during his murder trial. Spector is recording solo newcomer Hargo's debut album, and a song called Crying For John Lennon will appear in upcoming documentary Strawberry Fields: Keeping The Spirit Of John Lennon Alive.
Lennon-McCartney tune rocks country chart
Lennon and McCartney returned to the U.S. country music charts for the first time in 12 years Thursday thanks to a cover of "Revolution" by Nashville trio Rascal Flatts. It debuted at No. 60 on the Hot Country Songs tally, almost 39 years after it was originally the flip side of "Hey Jude" in August 1968.
May Pang to release book of Lennon photos
John Lennon's former mistress May Pang is publishing a book of his photographs. Titled 'Instamatic Karma', which is the name of a popular Kodak camera and a reference to Lennon's song 'Instant Karma', it contains 150 photographs of Lennon that Pang had clicked during their 18-month affair in 1973 and 1974, when Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono were separated.
Paul and Heather Mills 'bonding on holiday'
Paul McCartney and his estranged wife Heather Mills are reportedly on a "bonding" holiday in the US. Paul allegedly flew to the Hamptons last week for the secret family holiday for the sake of their three-year-old daughter Beatrice. A source said: "It won't be a conventional family holiday, there is still tension."
Photographer remembers the Beatles in San Francisco
During his 12-year career in print journalism, Fred Pardini photographed both of the Beatles live appearances in San Francisco, 1965 at the Cow Palace and 1966 at Candlestick Park. The latter occasion is truly significant, as no one knew it at the time that it would turn out to be the Fab Four's final concert.
George travelled world in search of tranquility
Olivia Harrison has said George's time with the Beatles left him "shellshocked". Speaking to the Daily Express, she said, "He hated loud noises. And imagine if all day, every day, for five or six years, people were screaming at you when you opened your door, jumping on the hood of your car, looking in the window."
Rumor: Paul McCartney will join Brian Wilson onstage in London
Rumors that Paul McCartney will join Brian Wilson onstage in London next month have started to spread after a source reportedly told U.K. paper The Daily Express, "Paul and Brian are good mates and as Brian is going to be performing from Pepper, the word is Paul will join him onstage one night for a couple of songs."
Sgt. Pepper's turns 40 with special Hollywood event
On August 10 and 11, The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra presents a celebration of the seminal Beatles album with special guests Cheap Trick, and guest vocalists including Aimee Mann, recreating the classic album. It has just been officially announced that Geoff Emerick has come on board as the special guest musical consultant.
