While U2 has been making headlines and selling out stadiums on its 360 tour along with releasing the critically-lauded “No Line on the Horizon” album earlier this year, the Edge has been quietly preparing this reissue of the band’s fourth studio release. Following last year’s 2-CD set reissues and re-mastering of the 1st three U2 albums, plus their live “Under a Blood Red Sky” and the best-selling “The Joshua Tree,” this new package is lavishly laid out with complete liner notes and inside information about the 1984 sessions with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. The first CD is the original release, while CD #2 will be of particular interest to fans. All four of the songs that made up 1985’s “Wide Awake in America” EP (including the hit live version of “Bad”) are included here along with the various B-sides to the American and European “Pride” and “The Unforgettable Fire” singles. Along with those long-gone songs like “Bass Trap” and “4th of July” comes two never before released tracks – “Disappearing Act” and “Yoshino Blossom” – both displaying the Edge’s growing guitar prowess, but never deemed complete enough to go on the final 1984 album. This is a beautiful package well worth the money. Next up – U2 has to tackle the reissue of “Achtung! Baby,” but with all the B-sides and remixes from that album, it might have to be a box set!
